Video Games and Kids

Video Game Kid

Do your kids love video games as much as most kids do?

We want to know how you manage video games at your home. Do you have certain time limits set? What types of games are allowed? Do they need to buy their own games? Can they play during the school week? Are they allowed games on their cell phone (if they have a phone)?

Share your home rules for video games and how you deal with their requests and desires for playing.

In my house the kids are allowed 30 minutes of videogames per day. This includes playstation, gameboy, computer games, etc. This 1/2 hour cannot be saved up like unused minutes on your cell phone plan. Every day there are only 30 minutes of video game allowance. My husband and I feel that kids should use their imagination, play outside, run and have fun and well, just be kids!

My 2 sons play computer games almost everyday, from 1-2 hours, the most 3 hours, but not continuous, they play alternately. When they had their play station (it is broken now), they could only play during weekends. I also make sure that they play only child appropriate games, no violent ones. I’m not strict as to when they could play as long as they do their other stuff in the proper times, i.e. study when it’s time for homeschool.

I have a 12 year old son who would play 24/7 if we let him. We don’t. He is allowed to play for a couple hours the entire weekend if he has a good week at school and home. If he has a good week at school, but mouths off at home, no video games. If he is fantastic at home, but gets busted at school, no video games. If he gets bad grades, no video games. He is a 12 year old boy. Needless to say, there isn’t a whole lot of Video Game playing in my home.

We only had plug and play games before. Now we have a Wii and the kids love it but so do we. The kids can only play with adults and we have a great time together as a family.

    God bless,
    Sallie

For now, our home rule isn’t for our boys, its for US! We aren’t buying video games. Our little guys aren’t asking & they don’t know any better. So why put it out there? But I’ll be checking back to themomsblog.com for advice on what to do when they DO get older & start asking! : )

When we bought our son his PlayStation, we began by telling him it was a weekend activity only. Because one of his friends also had that rule, he didn’t really argue. Now that he’s older, he can play it for about 20 minutes before school IF he has everything ready at the door. If he isn’t organized in the morning, he loses the privilege. Again he doesn’t really argue because he knows he blew it.
