Someone just started up a chat with me on Facebook that I have never met before, and he was trying to sell some network marketing scheme. 

I never approved him as a friend, and he said he got my name from adding his friends' names to his friend list.  Wouldn't I have to approve him before he could chat with me?   Or is chat open to just whomever?

I THOUGHT that you had to be someones friend to chat with them. I know you can send anyone an inbox message but a chat...
