VENTURA, Calif., June 26, 2008:

More teens LOSE THEIR VIRGINITY IN THE SUMMER MONTHS  than at any other time of the year  (ABC News, 2007)

More teens SMOKE MARIJUANA  for the first time in JUNE and JULY than in any other months of the year (White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, 2007)

Teens see an average of 3,000 sexual references per week on MTV (Parents Television Council, 2004)

Even teens with the most attentive parents find themselves with ample opportunity in the summer months to explore and experiment with sex, drugs and alcohol.

Why did this come from Ventura? I only ask because I'm only 40 minutes from there.

What a scary depressing list of ickiness.  **sigh** I'm not looking forward to Sophie becoming a teenager.  Maybe I'll home school==from a remote hut in a jungle far far away from civilization!

But seriously, does the article or news sources offer any suggestions on how to handle these problems?  Or are they simple reporting gloom and dooM?

Probably just gloom & doom, Susie. Sad
It's much easier for the media to point fingers than to offer solutions to a problem.

Okay, I'm feeling a bit of gloom & doom myself at them moment. Sorry for the downer. Wink

Probably doom and gloom but it also makes sense.  The kids have a lot more free time, usually unsupervised, in the summer months and, let's face it, the clothes are skimpier which gives those hormones something more to rage about.  IMO, such things are an unfortunate natural consequence of society today.

Is this something we're worried about?
My daughter is still very young, but I teach teens, and yes, they will push limits in the summer, but bottom line, you know your kids, you know if something is wrong. I hate stories like this that just report statistics.
It does make me think that May might be a good time to have "the talk" though  Wink
