I visited a blog today that ranks really highly on Technorati, in which the woman states she makes enough from advertising for her hubby to quit his job.

I won't name the blog, because this isn't a rant. I just don't understand what's so special about it.

Granted, it's been going since 2001, so she's had time to build up some traffic.

But I read a few posts, and I couldn't see anything that would make me think "wow, this is a blog I want to link to".
It was pretty similar writing and content to a lot of blogs I've read.

I usually link to sites that have information that would interest my readers (all 3 of them), but I can't see anything unique here that would be worth duplicating, or sending my readers to see.

So I really want to know what you all think makes a blog "special".

What makes you want to link to it and worship the ground its' writer walks on?
'Cause I've got my halo handy... Wink

It's hard to say, because I don't know which blog you're talking about, but I have a few guesses as to why she makes that much money.

I think a huge key is that she's been around since 2001.  That benefits her in two ways.  First, blogging was just coming into it's own then, so she probably has a huge chunk of an audience that's followed her since the near beginning.  It's a lot easier to grow with little competition, and once you have loyal readers, they probably won't leave you.

Also, because she's been bloggin for so long, she probably makes a good amount in Adsense.  If she blogs on a profitable topic, and she's made good use of keywords, she has a huge amount of archives, which translates to big Adsense earnings.

And if she's big on Technorati, she probably has a good Google page rank, which will attract even more advertisers.

That's my best guess.  She may not be anything special as far as writing, but being around since 2001 probably has a lot of benefits.

As far as what makes a blog special....I'm still trying to figure that out.  Smiley

I've wondered that too about some blogs. I've seen bloggers on The Today Show and on New York Times magazine and didn't find anything that set them apart from all of the other bloggers.

I've been blogging for over 9 years now... owned many domains and still do not have the following of some.  On some blogs a person can talk about passing gas and they have over 40+ comments on the post. It's so weird!  I struggle to get a dozen a week! I barely have a following anymore.. a handful if I'm lucky.  It's something I've struggled with for years now, but I'm not giving it up, it's become a sickness for me.  I've done the money thing, just stopped recently.. I made a nice amount, but not having a popular blog really made it hard to keep at it and it started to feel more like a chore than anything. So I'm back to basic blogging my thoughts whenever I feel the need and trying to just do it for myself... because that's really what a blog should be about.

I guess I've always chalked it up to .. some people have "it" and some (me! LOL) just will never have it. It's one of those things that goes with blogging.

I didn't want to post a link because I didn't want it to seem I was picking on anyone.

If I do, do you promise not to get mad at me if you like the blog?   hiding

Look at you, popping out from behind the post.  If you say who it is, someone might let her know it was you!  What if she is planning on sharing all that loot with us and you just ruined it!

I'm being silly.  You gave enough hints in your rant that you don't really need to say the name.

laughing I was looking at you blogs and they look pretty good. I can't say what makes a good blog or a good website, I do believe it just has to be something you enjoy. My friend started out website about a month ago take a look at it and see if you like it, http://tipsandtells.googlepages.com  there is also my blog on the site. If you like it or thing your friends would I would love to link.
I am a mom of 5 daughters and I just wanted to let you know to be careful with the bubble baths with girls they can become more prone to bladder infections. I learned this with my first daughter, she loved the bubble bath.
Let me know what u think of the site. Suzanne  clap

Ya know... I don't think it has anything to do with a blog being per se "special".   What it all boils down to is simple traffic.  And someone can get traffic, not necessarily by repeat readers, but where they come up in the search engines. And if it is a work at home, make money at home, home business type blog/site - and their site comes up ranking high in the search engines - they are getting ALOT of traffic.  Those are big searches on the net - people wanting to earn money from home.  And if they are running adsense, the highest paying clicks are typically the work at home ones.

Also - since they have been around since 2001... I'm guessing that it started out as a website, not a blog... and has either moved to a blog OR her blog is part of her site or extension of the site and that is where quite a bit of the advertising comes in also - through all the other pages on the site.  (I'm speculating here since I don't know the site/blog)
