The Gift of Time
Now that the school year is well under way, let us take a moment to think about the true gift of Time. It.  We might soon hear from teachers that our child is not quite keeping up; we might sense a struggle with homework; we might fear upcoming tests and reviews. We consider tutoring.  We co- homework. We nag. All these approaches have their place.?

But in the midst of our angst we ignore one of the greatest factors in accomplishment- Time. We should never underestimate the power of this entity. Just as it is said that Time heals all wounds- so too, does it grow a child in all ways.?Time truly is our young child's best friend. The problem is it is not ours. We are results oriented, and if we work outside the home (which most of us do) we are always in a  ‘finish and get done’ mode. And we are programmed to think how we can move up, get a raise, or a better job. We rarely have the patience, faith or perspective to appreciate what Time has to offer us, let alone our child. ?

Any slow down in our child's progress makes us want to overcompensate and become an advance team.  We’re ready to go on the offensive and prepare the way so there won't be any detours, or roadblocks. If the road shuts down altogether we panic! The alternate route will take too long! And worse, there might not be an alternate route. Time is of the essence if we want our children to achieve a higher level, progress to the next grade, get into a good college.

But while Time is of the essence when it comes to the development of a child, it cannot be fast-forwarded, speeded up, rushed. It will accomplish what it needs to accomplish in its own due course. ?

Here, therefore, is a secret. If we love our children unconditionally; if we make their well being our number one priority; if we believe in our children’s abilities to move forward no matter what; if within them, we can instill and inspire a work ethic; if we share our faith and optimism, then our children will have the emotional strength to persevere through adversity and the emotional resilience to bounce back after failure.   The gift of Time, in all its glory, will do the rest.  Our children will succeed. Promise!
