Has anyone moved their blog from a blog host like Typepad or Blogger and gone to their own domain? I am in the process of doing this and I am really nervous about the switch. I am afraid to lose readers and subscribers. Any feedback on how it went for you? Any ideas on how to get everyone to move with you to your new digs? Thanks so much!

If you are just switching to a domain and not changing the hosting, you can just point the domain. Who did you buy the domain through? I know with godaddy you can just choose to point to your blog. That's what I did. It's really easy.
My domain grocerymama.com just points to grocerymama.typepad.com.
Or are you actually switching from one blog provider to another?

Are you starting a new blog and just asking people to start reading your new one?  Or are you going to do a redirect?  Where people who visit your old blog will get automatically redirected to your new one?

I am not sure how that would work, but please let us know how it does, as I would probably like to in the future!

You guys are totally talking French here, I admire your guts messing around with the technical stuff.  I still live in fear of the "delete" button.

I switched last wednesday and it was cake.  Except my feed with feedburner is still labeled my old name and I dread having to tell my subscribers.  Heck I may do it and not tell them - living on the edge, ya know?

Blogger makes it simple.  You just point to your new domain.  I am also letting them host it as well so nothing has really changed.

Good Luck.

I have not bought the domain yet so I am not sure. I just checked to see that it was available, and it is. I really wanted to start an entirely new site. If you look at my blog http://sometimesdisgruntled.blogspot.com you can see how it is laid out. I still want to do something similar, but I want to have more options, more areas, other than just confessions. Does that make sense?

How does blogger host it on a new domain? I am not sure I understand. Can I look at your old and new sites to see? Thanks.

Sounds like I just got something added to my to-do list!  I didn't think it was easy on blogger...I'm going to have to start looking into this...

Its so easy, once you know where you're supposed to go to make these changes and edits and stuff.

I don't understand any of that DNS and FTP and SQL and all of those letters and stuff but I did manage to get a few blogs set up.

It sounds more scary then it really is.  You first need to find a registrar. Register your domain.  Then you will need to find hosting.  Personally, I use name.com for my registrar and I use jaguarpc.com for my hosting.  I prefer to have the two separate because I have 9 domains that I own. (wee addiction Wink)  If you find a host that you want to go with, more than likely you can register a domain through them, and this probably would be easiest for first time domain owners, so you do not have to juggle the two, set up the nameservers and so on..

Once you get through all of that, it's just a matter of setting up a blogging platform on your domain. I love WordPress and my host comes with Fantastico, which offers a one-click installation of WordPress, even though I do manual installs, it's so easy and quick, so I would highly recommend a host (Dreamhost has been known to be a good one)  with Fantastico if you are unfamiliar with installing through FTP.

WordPress offers a way to import posts from blogging platforms that you may have previously used. It's pretty simple with a click here or there and following directions.

I know it sounds intense, but it's really easy and once you find the host, they can help you through the process or setting everything up.

Good luck! Smiley   It's very fun and addicting!

I hear so many good things about Wordpress. I'd love to switch over. My current blog is on blogger though. Will I lose everything when I go to the new domain if I opt to go with Wrodpress? Is there a way to redirect everything from my blgger site to a Wordpress one

You should not lose anything.   WordPress has the capability to import from many platforms, Blogger being one of them.  You would need to authorize WordPress to go into your Blogger and get the files and such. It's a simple step by step with instructions on what to do all the way.  This way you will have all your Blogger posts imported directly into WordPress.  Smiley

This is a behind-the-scences look at my Wordpress blog.  If you were moving your blog from blogger to Wordpress you would click on Manage, then Import, then you would click on Blogger.  Follow the directions and it should import your entire blog, comments and all.

If you click on my attachment it will get much bigger so that you can actually see it.
