 oh my

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/09/23/fifth-grader-suspended-for-wearing-anti-obama-shirt/

An 11-year-old boy in Colorado was suspended from school after he refused to take off a shirt that read, “Obama is a terrorist’s best friend.” His father says that the school is violating his son’s First Amendment rights.

Daxx Dalton, a fifth grader at Aurora Frontier K-8 School in Aurora, Colo., wore the homemade shirt on a day when students were asked to show their patriotism by wearing red, white and blue, according to MyFOXColorado.com.

When he was given the choice of turning the shirt inside out or being suspended, Dalton chose suspension.

“They’re taking away my right of freedom of speech,” he said. “If I have the right to wear this shirt I’m going to use it. And if the only way to use it is get suspended, then I’m going to get suspended.”

Dann Dalton, the boy’s father — a “proud conservative” who has taken part in anti-abortion protests — told MyFOXColorado.com that the school is making a mistake by suspending his son.

“It’s the public school system,” he said. “Let’s be honest, it’s full of liberal loons.”

He later told FOX News, “I didn’t expect (my son) to get what he got, that was ridiculously uncalled for.”

His son also told FOX News he was “encouraged” to wear the shirt by his father.

“I felt like I should wear it, because I have a right to,” he added.

The school district would not discuss the case, but said the district “respects a student’s right to free speech, such as the right to wear specific clothing,” but they reserve the right to review any situation that interrupts the learning environment, MyFOXColorado.com reported.

Dalton’s suspension was for willful disobedience and defiance, not for wearing the shirt. His father said he intends to sue the district.

Well,
I'd have to see the policy before I really could weigh in... but I have a few thoughts.

1) wouldn't it be enough that the boy wore a McCain/Palin shirt or even a shirt that had a big circle with a line through it that said OBAMA on it? - but to use the word terrorist is idiotic and clearly his father helped him with that. BUT - it is also slander and so far from the truth it is NOT funny.

2) I can't wait to see a picture of the father! I bet he is so proud that his son is as racist as he is.. Pure racism I tell you.

3) I'll stop because those are the nicest things I can think of!

At the high school here kids can not wear shirts with writing on them, period. So...if that were the rule then the school was within their rights. If however other shirts with other words are worn by students then the school is getting into censorship and that's not ok.

I won't talk about the dad and the message he's giving his kid.

I agree Audrey, that censorship should not be allowed at all.  However, when a message is in plain view to incite racist feelings, then it is wrong.  And I am sure you agree.

This boy I would hazard a guess, at 5th grade, knows what a terrorist is and also knows who Obama is.  His father in my opinion put him up to it, and encouraged him to wear the shirt hoping for just such a reaction from the school.  To make things even worse the news media is giving him a venue to spout his drivel, which in my mind makes the news media part of the problem.

This type of racism is going to be around the world as long as this type of person gets the attention they so crave.  As we all know there are true terrorists out there, this wanna be should not be given a voice.

At least that is my opinion.

Great blogpost about this incident, which pretty much sums up my feelings on it:

(Warning: profanity)
I have very little patience as a teacher for this type of thing. Free speech does not give you the right to impinge on anyone else's freedom and this kind of racist drivel does exactly that. He SHOULD have been suspended just for the shirt.

I blogged about it too... lol
And I could NOT agree more, though the one you posted is BETTER than mine.

And I do believe we should not censor in terms of free speech - unless it is racist or HATE filled. And what I mean is we were all taught to bite our tongues and be the better person. While I am not 100% on that as I am sure most of us aren't... I do censor myself from time to time because to not censor myself at all would be a very lonely alternative.

I hope I am clear. I am on cold meds... and I have two headaches! (one in each side of my head I tell ya!).

At the jr. high down the s treet here, kids can't wear jersey's/t-shirts etc. from any sports team. Local or worldwide.  I think it is a good idea for kids to not wear shirts that have writing on them at all...but thats just me.

Well, the first thing that popped in my head was--Shame on that Dad--for encouraging such blatant disrespect and hatred.  The second thing was that the school district was absolutely right in saying they can prohibit anything that defers from learning in the environment, BUT they should have encouraged the 5th to research starting a young republicans club or something to turn this into a positive.
I think the school and the dad are at fault here for promoting such disregard for other people's opinions.

OK.  I've said my peace.  I feel better now.

Wow. I totally agree with the school's position.
Totally unsuitable clothing for a child at school or otherwise.

Shame we can't think of a way to totally disarm this sort of political stunt, though.
The kid's dad obviously planned the whole thing, hoping for just this sort of media furore.

Sad, sad, sad. What a sad little man.

It is sad that in the year 2009 we still have people that choose to judge or discriminate someone based upon the color of their skin! My husband and I are teaching our son to have tolerance for everyone regardless of race.  He is only 2.5 years old but when Obama was officially elected we told her son what it means for him to be elected and even let him watch some of the coverage of the election.  We felt if we started now sending the message he would know what it means later to love everyone regardless because God loves all of us the same.

I don't see it as racist.  I do see it in poor taste and I am in NO way shape or form an Obama fan or supporter AT ALL.

If the school did NOT have a policy regarding messages or words on shirts the kid should NOT be suspended.  They can change the policy after that point if they must.
