The only thing I can think of is that maybe she thought I'd be so horrified that the doll was "anatomically correct" that I'd.... well, I don't know. What would one do? I can't imagine being offended by a body part. It's a BABY for crying out loud!!

We are not mind readers. If that's what she meant, she should've said something close to that. Thinking back, I just can't recall if my kids did or did not have boy dolls. We actually had very few dolls at all.

I have never bought her a doll. This has been a bone of contention between my mother and I. My mom ended up buying her a doll which REALLY bothered me. I wouldn't have minded if she decided one day that she WANTED a doll. That would have been ok. But to buy a doll just because she's a "girl" and apparently girls need dolls is ridiculous in my opinion.
Peanut loves ANYTHING my mom has, so of course, she decided she wanted a doll.
In the past, she had NEVER expressed interest in dolls. We have a "tradition", when she goes to the doctor (which she hates) she gets a treat after. I let her pick out any toy she wants and she has picked out a truck, a car, crayons and books, but never a doll (though they are right at her eye level on the shelf and the trucks are much higher).
When she said she wanted a doll (after her last appointment, I took her to the store and she picked one out. Coincidentally, it was also a "boy" doll, but it had a soft middle and was not "anatomically correct".
She decided on her own that this is what she wanted for her birthday, so it's what I bought her.
I hate it when we force gendered roles on our children. It is something I have tried to avoid with Peanut. That being said, I would never want to stifle her creativity, and I prefer her to direct her play and not have it influenced by other adults (as much as possible).
The next time I hear a salseperson say "Doesn't she want the pink one?" I might not be able to contain myself.

I"m chuckling...when you shop retail and need help there is no one around. We were in the grocery store the other day, we wanted hummus. No one seemed to know if/where it was. Another customer was able to help me find it. However when you don't want help, a cashier will be the first to comment on your purchases. I've picked up magazines and the cashiers have started flipping through them. Ummmm ring my purchase and read on your time, later.
